Getting Stumped at Auction

23rd May 2019

Tree Stumps to Go Under the Hammer in Cumbrian Salvage Sale With the weather turning towards summer, H&H Auction Rooms has turned its attention to the forthcoming Architectural Salvage and Garden Sale coming up this week on Thursday 30th May at the Rosehill Auction Centre in Carlisle. This type of sale is relatively few and far between in Cumbria, and in consequence has been increasing in popularity with both vendors and purchasers. Stephen Farthing, Auctioneer and Valuer at H&H Auction Rooms, believes that gardeners, having had an extended break with the Spring Bank Holiday, will be looking for the rusty and idiosyncratic architectural items which can add a focal point to the garden. Set to go under the hammer as the main highlights of the sale will be two eye-catching tree stumps each weighing over 1 tonne, many much sought-after sandstone troughs ranging from 1ft square to 4ft long, and a granite water feature. A fabulous metal horse will share the centre stage as well. In addition, there is a quantity of carved sandstone taking the shape of organic forms, in this case lots of foliage, along with up to 70 tons of rockery sandstone.  There’s an unusual and interesting Victorian cloche in wrought iron, and a quantity of reclaimed salt-glazed Victorian lawn edging, with an attractive rope finish in brown. There are up to 30 further architectural pieces ranging from straps and hinges through to quirky pieces with no name that may create intrigue wherever they are placed. Stephen says of the stumps: “Outdoor objects of this kind are both unusual and inspiring. At Highgrove Royal Gardens the Prince of Wales has created The Stumpery – an area in which these woodland giants have been reset and carved to resemble Greek Temples. In a bid to mimic Highgrove, we have inverted the stumps to create grottos and eye-catching features which we believe demonstrates their stunning potential. Although we have never sold anything like these before we would anticipate them being worth between £300-£400 each.” “The auction will start at 2:00 p.m., and we will be welcoming last minute entries on the morning of the sale. Doors open for viewing on the day at 9.00am. Stephen concluded: “Following the sale this week, our next auction of Architectural Antiques and Garden Salvage will be on Thursday 20th June. I am more than happy to discuss or view an item in advance of the sale for those who may be unsure about the suitability of a piece.” For any further information, please contact the saleroom on 01228 406320. columns="2" size="medium" Featured Tree Stump Carved Sandstone Metal Horse figurine Stone Trough
