Record Attendance at Swan and Turners Final Sale

1st March 2017

Swan and Turner enjoyed a record attendance and a packed saleroom, resulting in a record turnover at what was to be their last auction held in February at the Jedburgh saleroom. With 800 Lots offering fine paintings, an excellent choice of silver, quality oriental ceramics, and Ivory, all of which were keenly contested by over 400 registered bidders from both the UK and overseas, there certainly was some fervent bidding. Swan and Turner have always been renowned for selling fine art and paintings and this sale did not disappoint.  An exceptionally good example of a watercolour was a magnificent Duncan Cameron painting of Corn Stooks near Loch Carron, which was sold to a private collector for £4400. Another atmospheric watercolour of Cove Harbour by Berwickshire artist, John Blair, was sold to a local buyer, achieving twice its guide price, finally selling for £2900. “To receive such an outstanding turnout was overwhelming,” said Frank Forrest, Auctioneer.  “We saw some exceptional prices achieved including 19th Century Chinese Ivory Panels, which sold for £2600 and £1700 to a UK buyer.  A Silver Vinaigrette/Pill Box by Sampson Mordan met fierce competition to finally bring the hammer down at £1100.   I would like to thank all of those who have supported and attended our auction rooms over the years; it has made for sales that have attracted interesting pieces resulting in both exhilarating and exciting sale days.” Marking the end of an era for Swan and Turner and the Jedburgh auction rooms, this sale certainly did not disappoint.  Weekly sales will continue to run as normal from the H&H Auction Rooms in Carlisle - for further information email Stephen Farthing, Auctioneer or t: 01228 406320.
