Winter Sale Highlights
Featuring a fine collection of silver, including some unique pieces from two local estates, this year’s penultimate sale saw over 700 Lots go under the hammer. One area in the antique sector still performing very well is definitely silver and the highlight of Monday’s sale was a sliver tea service which achieved £650.00. The well attended sale saw a pounce pot in the form of a silver owl fly away, selling for £550 - three times the estimate. The silver owl pot would have been used to hold ‘pounce’ which is crushed cuttlefish, a fine powder used to help dry ink on documents. “This really does demonstrate that collectors still like the unique and unusual,” said Stephen Farthing, Auctioneer at H&H Auction Rooms. Declaring the best sale of the year, Stephen was delighted with the number of collectors attending, which made for fervent bidding on the day, as he explains here: “With Christmas upon us, the Santa Claus element kept prices high, with the jewellery selling especially well. A collection of half sovereigns sold for around £100 each and I was delighted to see gold forging prices seasonally high. “We are now busy preparing for what we expect to be a grand finale to the year. Our final sale on Monday 19th December will have a quantity of Border Fine Arts, which is already promising to be the star of the show,” adds Stephen. The sale is at Borderway, Rosehill, on the outskirts of Carlisle, adjacent Junction 43 of the M6. Viewing is available on the Thursday before the sale day 5pm to 7pm, Friday 9am-5pm, Saturday 9am-12pm and from 9am the morning of the sale.
