H&H Auction Rooms reports high level of interest and soaring prices following first virtual sale … one of Carlisle’s leading auction rooms was relieved to re-open this week, holding its first auction since lockdown.
Following the government’s guidelines, H&H Auction Rooms hosted a comeback commission bid auction which went ahead allowing socially distanced viewings at Rosehill. With over 370 lots, there were plenty of goods to sell as well as many regulars keen to get back to buying.
Normally a sacrosanct event in the diary, the Monday auction has been sorely missed by all buyers, sellers, valuers, and auctioneers during the pandemic lockdown period. For many, the H&H sales are not only an opportunity to obtain great items at great prices, but also offer a highly valued social aspect for those attending the auction rooms.
Commenting on the sale, Stephen Farthing, Auctioneer and Valuer at H&H Auctions Rooms, said: “The new arrangement was an unusual set-up but one that worked surprisingly well. Although the sale was much more managed by the Auctioneer with instantaneous judgement on every lot, it was tremendous to reunite with purpose again. We could really feel the camaraderie between the people who were able to reacquaint themselves with each other once more in the days prior. To renew these connections was a great pleasure and happened in tandem with a very successful sale.”
Unlike in normal times, H&H reports more time spent examining the lots as bidders could not be there physically on sale day. With approximately 400 people viewing over three days the easing of lockdown restrictions was welcomed by all. Now that there is a tried and tested clear way forward, the premises are looking forward to holding three more sales over the summer on 28th July, 11th and 25th August, with ambitions to increase the regularity as regulations allow.
With people eager to buy, Stephen spoke about the immediate trends that emerged from the auction: “The first thing that stands out as a big hit is the notable strong interest in gold and silver, which was very buoyant probably because it’s a safe bet for the future in these uncertain times. Prices being achieved were about 20% higher than pre-Covid, which is significant and hints at the overall surge in demand post-lockdown. We also saw furniture dealers keen to replenish their stocks and general high levels of enquiry for Architectural sales with people concentrating on their house and gardens.”
One example of this is reflected in garden ornaments: “Something to note is that items that would have sold for £40 pre lockdown went for £75. This is probably a result of spending so much time at home, with people concentrating on spending on their interiors and outdoor spaces. Now they can bid at auction they are keen to do so, which means we’ve actually been able to attract many more new customers.”
